Drills, practice, training

One of my training goals is to write two training plans every Monday. My training plans tend to be progressive, with an end result of some kind of play we can use during game play. Last week I worked on Torando’s, so I started with doing lots of transition work, getting everyone ready for transitioning around another player and all the feedback I got was really positive. I also like to start a session off with some athletic drills, Wednesday I did some sprints and core work and yesterday I started with the pyramid drill. 

How do you like your training structured? What types of drills do you enjoy practicing? What is your training like? 

I’m trying to make the most of my skills and ability and learning new things myself, I would love to know what other leagues do!

I’ve coached two sessions at derby now and had all positive feedback from skaters but I don’t know if that’s just because I’m a skater as well or not. 

I also got to lead a freshie session today and we were working on falls and stops and everyone seemed to do pretty well. There were some struggles but that’s expected and as a skater you are always harder on yourself than your peers. I tried to make it very clear that they will keep practicing these skills as we go along. Some of the feedback today was that they wanted to be pushed harder and I think that I was a little easy on them. I’m still trying to figure out how to be nice but still firm and push them, but at the fresh meat stage I don’t know how much we should be pushing them, because it’s really about getting the skills up to a testing standard. I’m going to have a good think this week about my coaching goals for the current season and how I can achieve them.
